Açaí: From the Forest to the Bowl
(1) Açaí is a small purple fruit. It grows on a tall palm tree in the Amazon region, especially in the state of Pará. For many riverside families, açaí is not a dessert: it is part of lunch, with fish and cassava flour.
(2) Harvesting açaí is hard work. Climbers go up the thin palm trees with a ring of rope or fiber around their feet, called peconha. They cut the bunches of fruit and carry them down carefully.
(3) Today, people eat açaí in many countries. In big cities, it is often frozen and served cold, with banana, granola and sugar. This is very different from the traditional way of eating it in the Amazon.
(4) The popularity of açaí brings jobs and money to the region, but it also creates problems. When the price goes up, some local families cannot buy as much açaí as before.
